Summer Shakespeare Festival 2000

The Opening of The Summer Shakespeare Festival in 2000 started the "Czech-Slovak" comedy Taming of the Shrew directed by Slovak director Vladimír Strnisko. The double language translation was a common work of Slovak Lubomír Feldek and Czech Martin Hilský - this reputable translator and professor of Charles University received from the Queen Elisabeth II. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for spreading the English literature. Costume for this play were created by worldwide respected scenographer Jan Skalický. The news of the season was a guest performance of AandBC Theatre Company - London, with the play The Tempest. Thanks to this event we could hear the English from the stage of Burgrave for the first time. The Tempest (translated again by Martin Hilský) was also introduced by the Czech company CD 94. The variegation of the season was intimate Macbeth presented by traditional Japanese theatre. This year The Festival appeared as guest at the Brno´s castle Špilberk for the first time and the second time gained the auspice of president Václav Havel. Summer Shakespeare Festival was also included to project Prague – European City of Culture 2000. More here
