WELCOME TO SUMMER SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL 2011

Summer Shakespeare Festival introducing the open-air productions of William Shakespeare is the biggest and oldest festival of this kind in Europe. Even though most of the productions are in Czech and Slovak, noted plays and magic atmosphere of summer production at time-honoured castles entice theatre-goers from all countries around the world.

This year’s edition of the festival will be held from June 23 to September 3 in Prague, Brno, Ostrava, Olšany and also in Slovakia.

This year´s news is premiere THE TAMING OF THE SHREW (Zkrocení zlé ženy) with popular film and stage player Tatiana Vilhelmova in leading role of flippant Katherina and with excellent Roman Zach in role of her dangerously cute „tamer“ Petruchio. Drama about courtship of two strong personalities, between whom it sparks strongly since the beginning, is directed by Daniel Špinar, tranlated into Czech by Martin Hilsky.

Attention deserves also Slovak title MEASURE FOR MEASURE (Oko za oko – niečo za niečo). This hilarious low comedy with many funny moments has this year Prague premiere.

In repeated performance we will introduce title HENRY IV. (Jindřich IV.). Originally two parts play about policy and one unique friendship of prince Henry with genial knight John Falstaff was for our summer outdoor production directed by experienced stage director Lucie Belohradska.

Even this year we will see popular knight Falstaff – this time as failure seducer – in comedy THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR (Veselé paničky windsorské) directed by Jiri Menzel. Reputable stage director is – together with Milos Forman and Vera Chytilova – also best known representative of film Czech New Wave. Jiri Menzel made The Merry Wives of Windosr the unrivalled spectator winner.

Audience was gained over also by the tragedy ROMEO AND JULIET (Romeo a Julie): immortal story of two young Verona lovers, this time in modern scene.

Programme will also includes MACBETH, impressive tragedy about birth of evil. For the last time this year we will present play ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA (Antonius a Kleopatra), love story with wonderful Slovak actors. And for the first time we will introduce drama RICHARD III., another Slovak play.
